Winner of the week 2

Winner of the week 2

We are pleased to announce that Evan Dell with his shot ‘Atlanta Burns’ is our flickr pool winner of the week!

Atlanta Burns

This shot actually leads on nicely from our recent post about using filters in bright sunlight.

We picked this shot as the winner of our week for a few different reasons. It clearly shows that Evan thought about the type of shot he was going to take when he saw his location and ambient lighting, which is exactly what we try to push here in PromoShots. Evan saw that he was shooting directly into bright sun light, so he used a polarizing filter on his lens, to make sure he didn’t lose the detail in his background and to darken down the sky to make the clouds ‘pop’.

This shot again promotes great use of our favorite strobes, the AlienBee’s by Paul c Buff. Evan over powered the sun with even lighting from the front and used extra strobes as rim lighting to really make the band pop out from the background.

He did a great job on the post processing in this image. He used a nice warm tone to offset the warmth from the sun, but at the same time managed to keep the colors realistic throughout.

Here is what Evan told us about this shot:

The band i was working with is a metal/hardcore band with some southern style throw in there so we wanted something rugged background and location wise so we found this old gas station/muffler shop and began to set up. the sun was pretty over powering form the right of the gorup so we set up two front lights on was the beauty dish boomed for key directly over the band the other was a giant octabox to the right of the band at low power to evenly light their faces . the sun would periodically move behind clouds so i used a rim light far left of the group. it was actually my first time using a polarizer for that type of shoot so i got nice bold clouds out of it and blue sky.

i used a wide angle (17-40mm f4 usm L) because the majority of the band is skinny and kinda average size and i wanted to add some masculinity in the shot form a lower angle.
